Kimball Method SCD Component Disadvantages

Even though the Kimball Method SCD does a lot of things well, there are some downsides to it compared to the SCD Wizard:
  • Memory consumption for this component is larger, because it's caching data and not doing row-by-row lookups. See the Performance Improvement discussion for benchmark number comparisons to the SCD Wizard.
  • It’s not architected to provide Change Stream style SCD processing. It expects the complete dimension table as an input.
  • It's not supported by Microsoft - only by the people involved in this project. However, you do get full access to the source code.

I happen to think that the above issues are outweighed by far by the benefits of the component, and how it addresses the well-known issues with the SSIS SCD Wizard.
